    Quick Summary

We all love plain or fruit-flavoured yoghurts after meals or simply on a hot and sunny afternoon. What if we told you that a thick, yummy yoghurt can also be prepared without milk? For all the vegans in the house as well as for the foodies who like to experiment, we have a recipe for you! Let's learn how to make coconut yoghurt at home. This yummy recipe can be whipped up with easy and simple ingredients. Just ferment the coconut milk to enjoy the tangy goodness of homemade coconut yoghurt and customise it to suit your taste preferences. The longer you ferment it, the tangier it will taste.

    Deep Dive

If you are looking for a dairy-free alternative to yoghurt, you can try making coconut yoghurt at home. It is delicious, rich in texture, creamy, and tangy and can be a perfect companion to your salads and side dishes. Also, you don’t need to order a barrage of ingredients from the market to try this recipe at home. Just a coconut and a probiotic capsule can give you yoghurt that tastes almost like its Greek version. Let’s dive into the ingredients and recipe-making process.

How to Make Coconut Yoghurt at Home?

Why buy coconut yoghurt from the store when you can easily make a rich, creamy, and thick version at home? Before we jump into the recipe, let’s review the ingredients and equipment you’ll need.

    Ingredients:

    1. Coconut Milk: Get full-fat coconut milk if you want a creamier and thick texture for your coconut yoghurt. Get as many cans as you need.
    2. Yoghurt Starter or Probiotic Capsules: 2 tbsp for 2 cans of coconut milk. Adjust the quantity as per the quantity of your coconut milk. Make sure you choose the capsules and starters specifically used in vegan cooking.
    3. Sweetener: From plain old sugar to rich honey, add sweetness as per your choice. Skip this ingredient if you want to make unsweetened yoghurt.

    Equipment:

    1.      Glass jar with lid

    2.      Whisk

    3.      Mixing bowl: Large or medium as per the quantity

Note: Sterilise all the equipment before using it. First, wash it in soapy water and then use hot water to rinse it. You can also run it through a dishwasher for quick, hands-free cleaning.

    Step-by-Step Process

Now that you know what to get to prepare homemade coconut yoghurt, let’s check the making process:

Step 1: Shake the coconut milk cans nicely before pouring them into the mixing bowl.

Step 2: Now, start whisking the coconut milk until it gets a thick creamy texture. Once the desired texture is obtained, you can add the sweetener and whisk it well.

Step 3: Now, add the probiotic capsules or a yoghurt starter. Read the instructions on the back of the package and follow them carefully. If you are using probiotic capsules, just open them up and add them to the mixture. Whisk the mixture again so that all the ingredients are mixed well.

Step 4: Once the coconut milk and starter/probiotics are well mixed, it's time to transfer the mixture into your sterilised glass jar. Seal the jar tightly with the lid and place it in a warm spot in your kitchen. Ideally, you want the temperature to be around 35-40°C (95-104°F) for optimal fermentation. You can use a yoghurt maker or a dehydrator, or simply wrap the jar in a towel to maintain the warmth.

Step 5: Leave the jar undisturbed for at least 8-10 hours, allowing the fermentation process to work its magic. The longer you let it ferment, the tangier and thicker the yoghurt will become.

Step 6: After the desired fermentation time has passed, remove the jar from its warm spot and give it a gentle shake. The yoghurt should have thickened and set, resembling the texture of traditional yoghurt. If it's still too runny, you can let it ferment for a few more hours. Transfer the jar to the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 4-6 hours. Cooling it down will further enhance the thickness and creaminess of the coconut yoghurt.

Step 7: Your homemade coconut yoghurt is now ready to be served. Garnish it with fresh fruits, and granola, or drizzle a bit of honey.
