Chukku Kaapi, also known as Sukku Kaapi, is a herbal beverage originating in South India, made with dry ginger, spices, and sweeteners such as palm jaggery. Although the name refers to coffee, the original version of chukku kaapi does not include coffee. Chukku kaapi is traditionally cold, with dry ginger as its main ingredient, but coriander seeds, black pepper, cumin, and cardamom add to its flavour. In some houses today, coffee powder is added, making it taste similar to a cup of traditional coffee. This drink is mainly popular in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where it is usually drunk during the rains or even at the end of a meal. The dry ginger warms the drink, while black pepper and cumin lend it a rich spice flavour. Palm jaggery gives it a soft sweetness without making it too sugary on the palate. Chukku kaapi is a drink made with common household items found in any Indian kitchen, earning it a reputation as an easy drink to prepare whenever someone craves a hot drink. Chukku kaapi is served steaming hot and is a perennial drink in many South Indian households, where it is normally consumed with some traditional snacks during winter or rainy seasons.
