: A Classic, Spiral Pastry

What’s soft, gooey, and packs a flavourful punch? Cinnamon rolls! A popular pastry served in Northern Europe and North America, these rolls are made from staple kitchen ingredients and are easy to prep. If you’re looking to add a classic to your festive dessert table, or simply want to jazz up evening tea during the holidays, these cinnamon rolls have you covered.

Ingredients

For the Dough:
1 cup (240 ml)Warm milk
2¼ tsp Active dry yeast
¼ cupGranulated sugar
¼ cupMelted butter
2Eggs
3½–4 cupsAll-purpose flour (maida)
½ tspSalt
For the Filling:
⅓ cupSoftened butter
¾ cupBrown sugar
1½ tbspCinnamon powder
For the Glaze:
1½ cupsPowdered sugar
3 to 4 tbspMilk
½ tspVanilla extract

Directions

Description - Step 1

Activate the yeast

Add milk to a pan and warm it, but don’t let ot boil. It should be warm, not hot. Then, add sugar and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

Description - Step 2

Make the dough

Add melted butter (lukewarm, not hot) and eggs to the yeast mixture and whisk. Now, gradually add flour and salt and keep mixing till a soft dough is formed. Knead for 5–7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

First rise

Take a large bowl and grease it. Now, add the dough into the bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size. While the dough rises, prepare the filling by mixing brown sugar and cinnamon. This will just take 2 minutes. Also, keep softened butter ready.

Description - Step 4

Shape the rolls

Once the dough rises to twice its size, it’s ready to shape the rolls. Start by punching down the dough. Now, roll it out into a 12×16-inch rectangle. Spread the butter evenly on the dough. Then, sprinkle the sugar-cinnamon mix. Now, roll tightly from the long side and slice into 10–12 rolls.

Second rise and bake

Grease a baking pan and neatly arrange the rolls. Cover and let rise again until puffy. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18–20 minutes until lightly golden on top but still soft.

Make the glaze

In a bowl, add powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract and whisk together until smooth. If it’s too thick, add more milk. It should be pourable. Spread over the warm rolls and serve fresh.
