Indians cherish their food, and millions of orders, whether for desi dishes or American classics, reflect an eating pattern of comfort, local eating, and sampling international flavours, as revealed by trends and food delivery app reports. There is one dish that still reigns, and this particular dish was ordered a whopping 93 million times this year, on Swiggy, which is roughly 194 orders every minute!
The year 2025 showed that when it comes to food, India has a habit of staying in its comfort zone. The reigning dish was a classic, but a few surprise entities (maybe just one!) also made their way to India’s most ordered and loved dishes in the year gone by. By the time you finish reading this article, hundreds of pizzas will have been delivered, dosas will be folded, and countless chai-samosa combinations will be warming up evening snack times across the country. But beyond these numbers lies what comfort means to different people.
As per reports, biryani remained India's favourite. As per food delivery app numbers, 93 million orders for biryani were placed in 2025. Within this list, chicken biryani dominated with 57.7 million orders. Biryani is a whole meal in itself with rice, meat or vegetables, that does not need any sides. You can have it solo or use it as a centrepiece to feed guests on special occasions. One fascinating detail here: every sixth biryani ordered came from Hyderabad.
Coming in second place, burgers were also on the cravings list for many foodies, with delivery apps clocking in around 44.2 million orders. Numbers show that the most burgers were ordered between 3 PM and 7 PM, perfect for solo binging or sharing, when the munchies hit, with chicken burgers taking up 6.3 million orders. Late-night cravings also saw a surge in the order of burgers, and here too, chicken burgers led late-night orders with 2.3 million orders between 12 and 2 AM.
This one is no surprise as urban India loves their fast food. While pizzas are more common with dining outside, it still came third, clocking 40.1 million orders. One memorable order was noted from Bhubaneswar, which saw someone order 207 pizzas in a single day! Pizza's popularity in India also reflects changing lifestyles. With more nuclear families, busy schedules, and a desire for quick yet satisfying meals, pizza ticks all the boxes. Plus, Indian pizza toppings have become a category of their own, making it a glocal dish indeed!
Dosa also held its own, with 26.2 million orders, and veg dosa topped the trends. Crispy and golden-brown, with fillings or without, dosa has transcended regional boundaries. You can have it plain with just coconut chutney, stuffed with a spicy potato mixture, add cheese, or go gourmet with trendy toppings. The reason it falls below on the order list could have something to do with how it loses its trademark crispiness when delivered… and yet it remains fourth on the list!
When the clock strikes 3 PM in India, there's a collective craving that sweeps across offices, homes, and colleges – for snacks! Indians this year ordered 3.42 million samosas during snack hours (3 PM to 7 PM), paired with their favourite cuppa. Whether these are being grabbed from the local tea stall or being ordered from a food delivery app, they always make it to the trending list. One Bengaluru order stood out with 95 samosas in a single order – possibly for an office party or a large gathering.
Continuing the beloved chai-samosa ritual, Indians ordered 2.9 million cups of adrak (ginger) chai during snack time. Adrak chai is a bridge between the lull of the office hours and the transit back home, a conversation starter, a stress-buster, and a big hug in a cup. The ginger is what gives the chai its kick. It’s both comforting and invigorating, perfect for those mid-afternoon slumps or evening wind-downs.
Purists and some bakers will argue that white chocolate is not chocolate, but that did not stop many Indians from ordering white chocolate cakes. It topped the dessert charts with 6.9 million orders, followed by regular chocolate cake with 5.4 million orders. This trend might reflect a shift toward slightly less intense, more delicate sweet flavours. Interestingly, cakes dominated late-night dessert cravings too, with chocolate waffles, chocolate cakes, and white chocolate cake being the most ordered desserts for late-night indulgence.
Looking at the year's trends, comfort food rules, whether it's the familiarity of biryani, the indulgence of pizza, or the simple pleasure of chai and samosas. Then comes in fast food, which seamlessly blends into local culture. There has also been a resurgence of regional cuisines, which are experiencing a renaissance even as global flavours find enthusiastic audiences.
