Diwali 2026 preparations in South Indian homes often begin days ahead with sweet and savoury snacks, and what holiday can be considered complete without a yummy, crisp murukku? It means ‘twist’ in Tamil, as it is curled using a murukku presser. While there are traditional Diwali snacks, the Butter Murukku is one of those that are melt-in-your-mouth and crisp. This deep-fried snack is popular in the southern part of India and is known by the name of Benne Murukku too, where benne means butter. It can be safely relied upon for tea-time treats during Diwali or serving to visiting guests. It is quite an easy Deepavali recipe as well since its dough preparation uses only a few ingredients, and the murukku lasts for two weeks in an airtight container.
