Mahashivratri 2026 is right around the corner and if you’re planning on keeping a fast on the day, you must try this farali pattice recipe. It’s a Gujarati snack specially made for fasting. An inspired take on the regular potato patty, the farali pattice has an outer cover of potatoes and a sweet and nutty filling made from coconut, nuts and raisins. It’s the filling that makes it more satiating than a simple, potato patty.
Thoroughly rinse the potatoes under fresh water. Boil the rinsed potatoes in a pressure cooker on high heat for 12-15 minutes, or 2-3 whistles, till they are tender and completely cooked. Peel the potatoes, add to a bowl, and mash them with a fork. Let the mashed potatoes cool completely.

Step 2: Make the potato dough
Add the singhara atta to the bowl with the mashed potatoes. Also add a pinch of rock salt and knead the mixture. Cover and keep it aside.

Step 3: Dry roast the nuts
Place a small pan on low heat. Dry roast the peanuts. Keep stirring to prevent burning. Roast till they are crunchy with a few black spots. Keep aside and add cashews to the same pan. Now, roast the cashews till they turn lightly golden. Keep them aside and let them cool. Once they’re cooled, coarsely crush the peanuts and cashews in a mortar-pestle.

Step 4: Make the stuffing mix
Crush a small green chilli in a mortal pestle till a paste is formed. Now, add the paste, along with the roasted nuts, grated coconut, chopped raisins, coriander leaves, sugar, and lemon juice to a bowl. Thoroughly stir the mix.

Step 5: Assemble the farali pattice
Lightly grease your hands with oil. Take a medium-sized ball from the potato dough and flatten it to a small, thick disc. Now, place 1-2 tbsp of stuffing the centre. Bring the edges of the dough towards the centre to seal the stuffed dough. Make sure the filling is properly sealed to prevent the pattice from breaking. Slightly flatten the stuffed pattice. Be gentle. Repeat for the remaining dough.

Step 6: Shallow-fry the pattice
Grease a non-stick pan or tawa or with oil and place it on medium heat. Now, place the assembled pattice on the tawa and shallow fry. Flip to allow the other side to cook. The pattice should be light golden in colour with a crunchy/crispy exterior. Place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain the excess oil. Serve hot.
