Steamed to gentle perfection, sweet kozhukattai is a rice flour dumpling filled with coconut and jaggery, traditionally made during Ganesh Chaturthi. It’s a festive staple across Tamil and Kerala households and carries regional tweaks, but this basic version delivers both simplicity and soul.
In a pan, combine grated coconut, jaggery, and cardamom powder. Stir on medium heat until the jaggery melts and blends evenly. Once thickened slightly, remove from the heat and allow it to cool. The filling should not be runny.

Step 2: Make Rice Dough
Boil 1 cup of water with a pinch of salt. Lower the flame and gradually stir in rice flour. Mix quickly to form a lump-free dough. Turn off the heat and let it sit covered for 2–3 minutes. Transfer to a plate and knead while warm until smooth and pliable.

Step 3: Shape Dumplings
Divide the dough into equal balls. Flatten one ball into a disc with your fingers. Keep the centre slightly thicker. Add a spoonful of coconut filling, then fold and seal the edges. Shape into a half-moon or closed modak-style dome.

Step 4: Steam Kozhukattai
Arrange prepared dumplings in a steamer lined with a banana leaf or parchment. Steam for 10–12 minutes until the outer layer turns slightly glossy. Do not over-steam, or they may turn dry.

Step 5: Serve Or Store
Let them cool slightly before serving. These are best consumed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight box at room temperature for a day, or refrigerated and reheated by steaming.
